Google announces Google Chrome OS

About Google Chrome OS

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

Facts

  • Lightweight, web focused OS
  • Will work on x86 as well as arm pc's
  • Initial targets the netbook market
  • It's a separated project from Android
  • Uses the Linux kernel

Supposedly even if Chrome OS and Android overlap this won't present a problem. Android remains a mobile phone / smart-phone / netbook operating system and Chrome OS will target netbooks and regular PC's.

Garmin ditches own Linux OS in favor of Android / Windows Mobile

According to the company's regional director for Southeast Asia sales, Hektor Tung, Garmin-ASUS is going to ditch their custom made Linux OS (currently used only on their G60 GPS, that should appear in Q3).

Although you would think that their GPS devices will overlap the existing Google Maps solution a reprezentative of Asustek is convinced that there's enough space on the market for both solutions.

Microsoft kills Windows 7 Starter's 3-app limit

It seems that finally Microsoft removed the 3 app limit "feature" from Windows 7 Starter, supposedly after the pressure from major OEM's.

From the Windows team blog announcement:

We believe these changes will make Windows 7 Starter an even more attractive option for customers who want a small notebook PC for very basic tasks, like browsing the web, checking email and personal productivity.

The thing that bugs me as strange is the fact that Windows 7 Starter does NOT include DVD playback support nor (I quote), Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.

Well that's a bugger. Hopefully there aren't going to be a hole lot of notebooks with this version.

SkyOS development status update

Robert Szeleney gave another update in regard to the development halt of SkyOS:

For the last weeks and as it looks like quite a few more weeks I'm in contact with a lot of people talking about their
ideas to continue SkyOS development. Unfortunately many people completely underestimate the amount of work required to manage a development team for SkyOS, either an open or closed source version, or completely lack vision and or motivation and or seriousness. Anyway, I'm still reading through my inbox hoping to get in contact with people with real motives and knowledge being able to bring SkyOS to the next level.

NetBSD to participate again in Google's Summer of Code

For the fifth year in a row, the NetBSD Project has been selected as a mentoring organization in Google's Summer of Code. As in previous years, this provides a great opportunity for students to get paid to hack on NetBSD, learn about contributing to a major open source project and to become part of an exciting community.

MikeOS 3.3

The biggest feature of this new release is a text editor: EDIT.BIN.
Unfortunately it's very basic (like notepad) and you have to convert your dos files to the unix style format using the dos2unix command on a linux box, or use something similar.

Changelog:

# New program: EDIT.BIN -- a full-screen text editor (currently
limited to Unix-formatted text files)

# README.TXT is no longer copied to the disk images; instead,
programs/sample.txt is added for use in EDIT.BIN

# CLI now includes CAT command to display a file: 'CAT FOO.TXT'
